A glimpse into Engineering as a career

Looking at the number of engineering colleges in our country and the number of engineers passing out of these colleges, I thought of writing a post for school students and their parents – to give them a glimpse into Engineer as a career.

“Scientists investigate that which already is, engineers create that which has never been.” – Albert Einstein

Engineering is all about applying your scientific knowledge to solve problems in the real world. While science is a platform to understand the world, Engineering makes this understanding applicable to real life by designing and making infrastructures, problem solving and more. Everything we use is engineered from various types of raw materials by putting them together to transform into a finished product. Isn’t this interesting? To put in a nut shell, engineers identify the problem, analyse it and come up with easy solutions. Engineers are best known to create bridges and vehicles after considering the science involved behind them. Engineering is acknowledged as a discipline that opens up opportunities and creates technology and products that make our lives easier. Engineers hold great panache in shaping the future by making use of their skills in every sphere of world from food to technology, buildings to science, medicine to power energy. The history of engineering speaks for itself. Our monuments like Qutub Minar, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, shine high marking our rich heritage of engineering.

Contrary to a popular belief that Engineering is a male profession, the number of females opting for this profession is increasing day by day. The most talked two Indian origin females namely Sunita Williams and Kalpana Chawla were successful engineers. They are distinguished from others by their ability to solve complex problems and come up with best solutions in the most practical manner. Facing challenges and complexities in a system and translating all dreams into reality is the essence of engineering.

Let’s recount some presently popular Engineers:
• Kirthiga Reddy, Head of Facebook India
• Pranay Chulet, Founder Quickr
• Raghuram Rajan, Governer RBI
• Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Founder Paytm

If your heart beats for engineering as a career, the first step is to know more before you start preparing. Stay tuned for more posts on engineering.
